Permits and noise protection in the Canton of Aargau
Since 1 April 2025, air/water heat pumps in the Canton of Aargau can be realised within building zones under the notification procedure – provided a noise protection certificate is available, another location would bring only insignificant advantages in terms of noise law and no exemption permit for distances is required. Exceptions are zones with increased requirements for the townscape and landscape as well as buildings under heritage protection (Canton of Aargau).
The notification is made via the cantonal platform for energy enforcement; if the municipality raises no objections within 30 days, construction can begin. The noise assessment is based on the Cercle Bruit enforcement guidelines (Heat pump leaflet, Canton of Aargau).

Questions from the region
Do I need a building permit for the heat pump in Aargau?
Within building zones, the notification procedure has been sufficient under certain conditions since April 2025. In protected zones or where distances are not met, a building application is still required.
Do you also work in Lenzburg and Brugg?
Yes. In addition to Aarau and the neighbouring municipalities, we take on jobs throughout the region – just ask.
What is included in the noise protection certificate?
Unit data, location and distances to the neighbours. In addition, in Aargau it must be shown that no location that is significantly better in terms of noise is available.
Do I have to replace my electric heating in Aargau?
There is no replacement obligation in Aargau. However, owners of buildings with electric heating must have a GEAK Plus prepared within five years from 1 April 2025, showing how the heating can be replaced.
