Zürich Kreis 1
Building services in Zurich’s Old Town – Kreis 1
Historic houses on both banks of the Limmat, commercial buildings around Bahnhofstrasse and Paradeplatz: in Kreis 1, cramped old buildings meet modern office and retail space. The requirements for air conditioning and heating vary accordingly.

Kreis 1: Altstadt
Kreis 1 comprises the statistical neighbourhoods of Rathaus, Hochschulen, Lindenhof and City. On the right bank of the Limmat, densely built Old Town houses predominate; on the left bank lies the City, the business district around Bahnhofstrasse and Paradeplatz.
In the Old Town, it is often not the unit but the space that is decisive: where may an outdoor unit be placed, and how are lines routed without impairing the building fabric? We clarify these questions before the quote – together with property management and the building authority if necessary.
Focus areas
Frequently requested in Kreis 1
Protected historic buildings
Planning pipe routes and unit locations so that the façade and building fabric are preserved.
Offices and shops in the City
Air conditioning of office and retail space, e.g. with ceiling cassettes or ducted units.
Technical and server rooms
Targeted cooling of small technical rooms, including with precision air conditioning units.
Maintenance of existing systems
Service and repairs for systems of all brands – even if we did not install them.
Permits and noise protection in Kreis 1
Large parts of the Old Town are a core zone or are protected. Outdoor heat pumps require a permit there; for air conditioning systems, the building authority decides on the procedure. We clarify this before planning begins.
In the Canton of Zurich, many air/water heat pumps can be installed under the notification procedure (placed indoors or outdoors up to 2 m³); in core zones and in areas with townscape or monument protection, outdoor units still require a permit. A noise protection certificate is always required for air/water heat pumps (Canton of Zurich). The City of Zurich accepts projects subject to notification via eBaugesucheZH; we compile the documents for you.

FAQ
Questions from the region
May I install an air conditioning system in an Old Town house?
In principle this is possible, but the location of the outdoor unit and the pipe routing must comply with the protection requirements. We clarify with the building authority whether a permit is needed before you invest.
Do you also cool individual offices or server rooms?
Yes. For individual rooms a split unit is often sufficient; for technical rooms with a continuous load, precision air conditioning units are an option.
